Eric Johnston's Art

May 14

I recently gave (Lady-Blackwings of Deviant Art)  some advice to get out of an artistic block. What I suggested was to draw something that isn’t your usual style. Find an artist you really like and draw something you don’t usually do. The more I thought about my own advice the more I thought that it could be fun to do that myself. I even took it one step further and decided to try and merge two styles that I really like (that are way different than my usual). The first style is a re-draw of a screen shot of Kara Kent from Superman Batman: Apocalypse. You can view that here. The second style that I wanted to do was from the MASTER ARTIST . (Ganassa of Deviant Art) His work is unparallelled in cell-paint shading. I have always admired how he is able to portray strong women and their muscular form while only using the simplest of cell shades. I wanted to pay homage to his work as well with this piece. As for the joke piece of this: I have a co-worker (Officemonkey of Deviant Art) who often likes to challenge the origin stories of Wonder Woman. He brings up a lot of logical points based on her history when viewed with Greek mythology. In that same vein, I couldn’t help my ask myself, if kryptonians can fly, which would mean they are likely not affected by gravity like we are, would Supergirl even need underware?Any way that’s it for me, stay tuned for another artistic style mash up. I am working on a Stanley Lau, Warren Louw, and Michael Turner mash up next.

Here’s another Supergirl.  A little more ‘racy’ this time.  I did this because I really enjoy the speedpaint videos that I can do when I record myself drawing.  Video to come.

Here is my Supergirl Speed Paint project.  It actually wasn’t a speed paint at all, took over 18 hours.  The reason I call it my speed paint project is that I recorded my work every step of the way and compressed this piece into a 7 minute how to video.

Illustrated by the ever talented J. Wichmann, I took it upon myself this evening to take a break from the comic and do some coloring practice. This is the result.  Its a lot of fun to work with someone else’s style.  I think the combination is always something unique beyond the sum of the artist’s talents.
